50 years of being handed just enough hope to get hurt.
A hope line across every Knicks season since 1985. It climbs in the good years and craters at the playoff exits, the injuries, the specific ways only this team can lose.
The finding
The Knicks' hope curve peaks at the 1994 Finals, flatlines for two decades after 2000, and is climbing again in the Brunson era. The years that build the most hope are the ones that end the worst.
The breakdown
- 1The line is a hope index: each season blends how many games they won with how far they actually went in the playoffs. High line means a real contender. The cliffs are where it ended.
- 21994 is the peak. 57 wins, no Jordan in the way, Game 7 of the Finals at hand, and John Starks goes 2 for 18. That is the closest the Knicks have come to a title since 1973.
- 31999 is the weird spike: an 8-seed that ran to the Finals in the lockout year, then Ewing's Achilles went. After 2000 the line falls off a cliff and basically stays there for 20 years.
- 4Now look at the right edge. 2024-25, 51 wins, first conference finals since 2000. The line is climbing again. If you know this franchise, that is not comfort. That is the warning.
How it's built
- 1For every season since 1984-85, pull two real numbers from Basketball Reference: the regular-season record and how far the team went in the playoffs.
- 2Turn that into a 0-100 hope index: hope = 0.55 * (win percentage * 100) + 0.45 * a round score, where the round score is 0 missed, 30 first round, 55 conf. semis, 80 conf. finals, 92 Finals, 100 champion.
- 3Using win percentage instead of raw wins auto-handles the short seasons (the 1998-99 lockout and 2019-20 covid year) without a special rule.
- 4Annotate 8 seasons with the actual moment the hope ended, each described from the real game it happened in.
- 5Heartbreak ratings on the annotations are editorial, 1 to 10. The records and playoff results underneath them are exact.

Caveats
- —The hope index is a constructed, subjective composite. Only the wins, losses, and playoff results underneath it are measured facts.
- —The blend weights (0.55 wins, 0.45 playoff round) are a choice. Different weights would move the line but not the shape: peak at 1994, flatline after 2000, rising now.
- —Heartbreak ratings on the annotations are editorial opinion, not data. Argue with them. That is the point.
- —Records are regular-season only. Short seasons (1998-99 lockout, 2019-20 covid) enter the index as win percentage, so they are comparable to full years.
